Amid the strengthening of the monsoon spells triggered by the sudden surge of westerlies, Kerala is poised to receive a few more intense spells for the next couple of days.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) upgraded the weather forecast for Kerala by issuing a red alert warning of extreme heavy rainfall for three districts – Wayanad, Malappuram and Idukki – on Thursday (June 26, 2025).

Seven districts – Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Kozhikode and Kannur – have been put on orange alert warning of very heavy rains, while a yellow alert has been issued for the remaining four districts where isolated heavy rains will continue. On Friday (June 27, 2025), five districts have been put on yellow alert, and a yellow alert for the remaining districts.

Meanwhile, the strengthening of wind from the Arabian Sea has led to some extreme rainfall events close to the ghat regions along the eastern side of Kerala.

Lower Sholayar in Thrissur recorded the highest rainfall of 218 mm up to midnight on Wednesday, an extreme category of rain.

The ghat regions in Idukki, Kottayam, Palakkad, Thrissur, Malappuram and Wayanad have been experiencing very heavy rains.
