The Opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) has stated that it will join forces with the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) in Kerala to pass a unanimous resolution in the Assembly opposing the Election Commission of India (ECI)’s move to conduct a special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in the State.

Speaking to reporters in Thiruvananthapuram on Friday (September 19, 2025), Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan questioned the ECI’s rationale of holding the SIR in the short run-up to the local body polls and the Assembly elections in 2026.

He said Kerala voted as per the electoral list based on the 2002 census.

The ECI demands production of a range of documents, including birth and domicile certificates, from voters seeking to re-register themselves in the upcoming list. “Lakhs of voters hardpressed to produce such documents risked getting disenfranchised”, he added.

Mr Satheesan said INDIA bloc allies, including the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] and the Communist Party of India (CPI), were on the same page on the subject.

He said the Leader of the Opposition in the Parliament, Rahul Gandhi, has a series of exposés on organised and well-entrenched digital voter list fraud on a scale that has caused public concern over the ECI’s integrity.

He said ECI appeared “hell bent on” whittling down marginalised and backward sections of society from electoral rolls, “given their penchant for voting for INDIA nloc allies.”
