Kerala HC grants bail to sacked IB officer

Kerala

The Kerala High Court on Thursday granted bail to former Intelligence Bureau (IB) officer Sukanth Suresh P. who had been allegedly involved in the suicide of his female colleague.

The prosecution charge against him was that Mr. Suresh had sexually exploited the victim under the promise of marriage and subsequently abetted her to commit suicide, following which she took her life on March 24. With his bail plea dismissed, he surrendered before the investigating officer on May 26.

The IB had terminated him from service following the allegations against him.

Terming the prosecution charges as false, Mr. Suresh’s counsel said that he was in custody for the past 44 days and his further custody would serve no purpose. Contesting this, the public prosecutor termed the allegations as serious and submitted that materials collected during investigation connect him to the crime. He further submitted that he was absconding during the time of initial probe and that he may abscond yet again. Moreover, the forensic science lab report of his mobile phone is awaited.

Granting him bail, a Bench of Justice Bechu Kurian Thomas said that the main purpose of the investigation is over and there is no chance of him influencing the victim or tampering with the evidence. Appropriate conditions can be imposed to prevent him fleeing from justice, it said and granted him bail.
