The Higher Education department has formally informed universities of its decision to discontinue the practice of appointing Senior Professors which had been implemented in accordance with the 6th University Grants Commission (UGC) pay revision.
The designation of Senior Professor was earlier granted to those who had served at least 10 years as Professor and qualified through a special interview process.
An order clarifies that the position was never intended to allow for promotions, but only to accommodate existing officers under the 6th UGC pay revision within the 7th Central Pay Commission scales. Besides, the post is not included in the 7th All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) pay revision order.
Financial constraints
Considering such factors and given the “present financial constraints” of the State, the government decided not to include the post of Senior Professor in either the UGC or AICTE pay revision schemes. As a result, the post remains inadmissible to teaching faculty across all universities and institutions.
Several faculty members who had been appointed as Senior Professor since 2019 have already retired from service, while some continue to hold the post in various universities. Their appointments are now likely to be annulled.
The decision is expected to have wider implications, particularly in the appointment of Vice-Chancellors and Pro-Vice Chancellors. Candidates belonging to the Senior Professor’s rank are often given preference for such posts.
