The Kerala government has granted permission to the Suchitwa Mission to purchase a boat for Haritha Karma Sena in Kainakary grama panchayat in Kuttanad in Alappuzha to collect non-biodegradable waste.

In eight of the 15 wards in the panchayat, waterways are the primary means of travel. At present, waste collection is carried out using a rented boat, which costs ₹27,000 per month.

The panchayat had decided to purchase a boat at an estimated cost of around ₹7 lakh instead of hiring one. However, due to a shortage of funds, it had sought permission to use Swachh Bharat Mission share for the purchase, for which the government has now accorded sanction.
