The newly-formed council led by the United Democratic Front (UDF) in Kalamassery municipality has requested the government to relax restrictions on construction of residential and commercial buildings under the zonal regulations of the Department of Town Planning.

The council has submitted a letter to the government, seeking required relaxations for construction works in green, industrial and park and space zones under the civic body. Jamal Manakkadan, chairperson of the municipality, said on Tuesday that the demarcation of areas as zones had impacted the launch of infrastructure and other related projects.

Mr. Manakkadan said the restrictions on construction works under the green zone regulation would impact the setting up of buildings on the land proposed for the judicial city, as it falls within the green zone. In green zones, the municipality will not be able to approve buildings of over 3,000 sq.ft. Such restrictions will affect the construction of various buildings and office spaces as part of the proposed judicial city, he said.

“We have sought the help of experts, including former chief town planners, to overcome the hurdles posed by zonal regulations,” he said.
