Instagram has been testing a new feature that lets users lock a Reel behind a secret unlock code, giving users and creators an option to share a hint to the code with their followers.
First spotted by TechCrunch, the Meta owned photo and video sharing app is testing the new functionality on it’s ‘design’ account, where it posted a Reel that unlocks when users enter a secret code in the app, with the hint in the caption.

To find the Reel, simply serach for head over to the @design account and tap on the Reel with a key icon. The code for this Reel is “threads”. To unlock the reel, tap on the ‘Enter secret code’ option, and now enter the secret code. After unlocking the Reel using the code, they will be greeted with a banner that says “Coming soon”, hinting that the feature will soon be available on Instagram.
It looks like the upcoming feature will allow creators to increase engagement with their audience and give their followers a sneak peek into their exclusive content. It can also be used to launch promotions or campaigns by brand and allow individuals to share content with their close friends.
The new locked Reels may sound similar to Instagram’s Reveal feature, which lets people uncover the story by sending the other person or page a DM. Instagram hasn’t officially said anything about the upcoming feature release, means you may have to wait some days to a few months before locked Reels make their way on the platform.
