Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has urged students to take a pledge to study the life of Mahatma Gandhi and imbibe Gandhian values.

In a message on Tuesday to all schoolchildren from Class VIII to Plus Two in connection with Gandhi Jayanti, the Chief Minister reminded them that Gandhi’s life was a roadmap for realising the hopes that families and society had of them.

He pointed out that in the past nine years, 55,000 classrooms had been made high-tech in State schools, and new school buildings had been constructed at a cost of ₹5,000 crore. Free textbooks and uniforms were available to students in time. The curriculum too had been revised according to changing times.

However, only if the students used these facilities fully and effectively could these be called fruitful, Mr. Vijayan said, urging the students to come forward to make use of them.

He also urged the students to be aware of ills such as drugs and other substances in society, remain alert against them, and make sure that those around them did not fall prey to substance abuse either. He called on them to become a part of government campaigns against substance abuse.

He also reminded them to develop a strong reading habit.
