A nine-member team of scientists and professors from IIT Roorkee has arrived at Kanichar as part of the rollout of a landslide warning system under the Living Lab project in Kanichar panchayat.
The delegation led by chief scientist D.P. Kanungo includes principal scientists Kaushik Pandit and Anindya Pain, Prof. Panigrahi, research associate Ritesh Kumar, senior technical assistant Ajith Dwivedi, technical officers Ajeet Singh Gaharwar and Aditya Bhaskar Bhagat, and project associate Nunavat Suresh.
The team met panchayat president Antony Sebastian and resilience officer K. Nithin. The scientists said their primary objective was to determine the appropriate sensors for predicting landslides based on the region’s soil structure and topography.
An automated weather station will also be installed alongside the sensors, allowing the system to forecast potential disasters three to four hours in advance. The sensors are expected to be in place by early next year. The study team will remain in Kanichar until September 23 to complete its survey.
