Amid tightening of immigration regulations under the Donald Trump administration, the US government Tuesday issued a notification, warning international students that their visas may be revoked if they “skip classes, drop out or leave program of study without informing”.
The latest announcement was shared by the US Embassy in India. “If you drop out, skip classes, or leave your program of study without informing your school, your student visa may be revoked, and you may lose eligibility for future U.S. visas. Always adhere to the terms of your visa and maintain your student status to avoid any issues,” the post on X read.
This comes about four days after a federal judge in California temporarily blocked the Trump administration from revoking the legal status of international students across the US while a lawsuit challenging earlier terminations proceeds.
On Thursday, US District Judge Jeffrey S White in Oakland issued an injunction preventing the government from arresting, incarcerating, or relocating students based solely on their visa status until the case is resolved, news agency AP reported.
Students can still be detained for other reasons, and their status may be revoked if they are convicted of violent crimes with prison terms longer than a year.
Over 4,700 international students had their permission to study in the US cancelled this spring with little notice or explanation, as part of Trump’s crackdown on immigrants and foreign nationals, the AP report read.
According to Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India, at least 295 more Indian nationals were set for deportation from the US.

In a written response to a query by Lok Sabha MP Raja Ram Singh, Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh said the MEA had registered its strong concerns regarding the need to accommodate the religious sensitivities and food preferences of the deportees.
Indians deported from the US
Since Trump took office in January this year, 388 Indians have been deported from the US, mostly in February. Of the 388, at least 153 are from Punjab, the MEA had said.
“From January 2025 till date, a total of 388 deportees arrived in India from the US. Of these, a total of 333 Indian nationals arrived in Amritsar from the US on three deportation flights that landed on 5th, 15th and 16th February 2025 respectively. Separately, 55 Indian deportees arrived in New Delhi from the US via Panama on commercial flights,” the ministry said in response to a query by MP Kathir Anand in March this year.
