In a suspected murder-suicide, a man allegedly strangled his wife to death before jumping from a private hospital building in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, in the early hours of Thursday (October 9, 2025).
The police identified the deceased persons as Jayanti, 63, and her husband Basuran, 73, who hailed from Karakulam.
According to official sources, Jayanti, who suffered from renal ailments, had been admitted to the hospital at Pattom on October 1 for treatment, including dialysis. She is suspected to have been strangled by her husband using a cable used for charging adjustable beds between 1 a.m. and 4.30 a.m.
Shortly after the alleged murder, Basuran reportedly jumped from the fifth floor. Hospital staff and security personnel rushed to the spot and shifted Basuran, who sustained spinal injuries, to the intensive care unit. While arrangements were under way to transfer him to the Thiruvananthapuram Government Medical College Hospital, he succumbed to his injuries.
The police suspect that financial distress could have pushed Basuran to take the extreme step. The couple has reportedly been struggling to meet the costs of Jayanti’s dialysis and an impending surgery.
The couple is survived by two children.
