Hibi Eden, MP, has urged the Railways to develop the Ernakulam marshalling yard as a new terminal with four platforms to ease congestion at Ernakulam Junction and Town railway stations.
He raised this and other rail development plans at a meeting with Divyakant Chandrakar, Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) of the Thiruvananthapuram Division, Southern Railway. The MP suggested expanding the existing coaching depot by constructing more pit and stabling lines to reduce delays in its implementation, according to a communication.
The MP pointed out that the location of the Ernakulam marshalling yard is very strategic, and its proximity to the metro rail, Water Metro, and the Vyttila Mobility Hub should be leveraged to integrate it into a multi-modal transport system.
He requested the Railways to support the project for a 2 km road link between Ernakulam Junction and Town railway stations. The proposal, which has been pending for a long time, would be of immense help to both passengers and the Railways. He said that mutual cooperation between the Southern Railway, State government, and the Kochi Corporation is required to prepare the necessary alignment, survey, and design for the project. He also suggested forming a joint committee to realise the project.
Mr. Eden proposed skywalks/link bridges connecting the three major railway stations in the Ernakulam Lok Sabha constituency—Junction, Town, and Thripunithura—with the Kochi metro stations. He said these intermodal linkages would serve as a model for integrated urban transport and significantly improve the travel experience in Kochi.
