The heavy rain that had been lashing parts of Kerala for the past few days is likely to intensify further with a fresh low-pressure area forming over the Bay of Bengal. The low-pressure area that formed over the southeast Bay of Bengal on Tuesday (October 21, 2025) morning is likely to intensify into a depression over central parts of the south Bay of Bengal and the adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal during the subsequent 24 hours.
The new system is likely to trigger heavy to very heavy rainfall across Kerala, especially in Ghat regions. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad and Malappuram districts on Tuesday warning of very heavy rains, and a yellow alert for the remaining districts, where isolated heavy rainfall is likely.
Red alert on Wednesday
A red alert has also been issued for Idukki, Palakkad and Malappuram on Wednesday where extreme heavy rainfall is likely, while Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Kozhikode and Wayanad districts were put on orange alert, and the remaining districts on yellow alert on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the weather system over the Arabian Sea is moving away from the coast of Kerala, although the system has been intensifying over the past 24 hours.
During the last 24 hours ending at 8.30 a.m. on Tuesday, Neyyattinkara in Thiruvananthapuram recorded the highest amount of rainfall with 11 cm, followed by Quilandi in Kozhikode (9 cm), Piravom in Ernakulam, Irinjalakuda in Thrissur, Thattathumala in Thiruvananthapuram and Kunnamangalam in Kozhikode with 7 cm each.
