The District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) on Saturday (May 24) held a meeting to review preparedness in the district following incessant rain. District Collector Snehil Kumar Singh, who is also the DDMA chairman, instructed revenue squads to monitor village-level activities to mitigate the impact of rain-related calamities.

The Collector also asked the squads to check the availability of relief camps for emergency relocation in case of landslip or other incidents. The Irrigation department will closely monitor the water level in various reservoirs and rivers. Entry of tourists to all major water tourism destinations, including beaches, will be restricted.

All mining and quarrying activities have been suspended in the district until further orders. To meet emergency situations, rescue squads including fire force, police, and community rescue squads, have been asked to remain prepared.

“The Army has promised all support in case of landslides or flooding,” said a senior Revenue official.

On Saturday, incessant downpour hit several areas in the district. Power supply was disrupted for several hours following the uprooting of avenue trees in and around Puthiyangadi. In Karassery panchayat, several trees were uprooted damaging houses and compound walls. However, no one was injured.

The approach road of a bridge under construction near Kottamuzhi in Karassery also collapsed in heavy downpour. Residents said it was the fourth time that the approach road had been damaged in the area. The State government had sanctioned ₹4.21 crore for the bridge project.
