The Muslim Youth League district committee took out a march to the office of the District Medical Officer (DMO) here on Thursday, protesting against the government’s alleged neglect of the health sector.

The protestors accused the government of destroying the health system in the State by not providing timely medicine and surgical equipment to government hospitals. The police stopped the march in front of the Civil Station.

Inaugurating a dharna that followed, Youth League State secretary Gafoor Kolkalathil slammed the government saying its arrogance amid failures had put the State’s healthcare system on life support. He alleged that medical stores were being neglected while liquor shops received preferential treatment from the government.

Ignoring the degradation of the hospitals in public sector depended by lakhs of people is a sign of the government’s failure, Mr. Gafoor said. “This government ensures liquor stores are well-stocked, but neglects to maintain adequate supplies in medical stores,” he said.

“If the State government does not treat the health department, the people will treat the government,” he warned.

Youth League district president P.M. Mustafa Thangal presided over the function. Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) district vice president K.K.A. Azeez, Youth League district general secretary Riyas Nalakath, and treasurer Noushad Vellapadam spoke.
