Google Gemini now automatically summarises your Gmail emails

Technology

Google has been steadily injecting AI features into Gmail. Last year, the tech giant integrated Gemini into Gmail, allowing users to leverage the power of generative AI to get a summarised version of individual messages or long threads.

This was useful for people who wanted to catch up on a long conversation, especially on small-screen devices like smartphones, but it required users to open the email and tap on the “Summarize this email” button that appears below the email title.

However, Google, on Thursday, May 29, announced that “summaries will be available at the top of the email content for messages where a summary is helpful, such as longer email threads or messages with several replies.” This means that Gmail will now automatically show a summary of the email created by Gemini wherever it thinks is useful. Google says Gemini will also dynamically update to reflect any updates to the email conversation.

If an email or thread does not automatically generate a summary, Google says you can resort to the Gemini sidebar or tap on the Summarise this email button.

As of now, this functionality seems to be limited to English and only works with the Android and iOS Gmail apps. Also, the tech giant says the new functionality will be rolling out gradually to everyone in the coming days, so it might take a while before Gemini starts automatically summarising emails for you. Note that this feature will only be available for Google Workspace users, Google One AI Premium subscribers, Gemini Education and Gemini Education Premium customers.

Festive offer

Announced as part of the May Workspace feature drop, Google is also rolling out Gemini summaries in Google Chat’s Home view and a new summary building block in Google Docs. NotebookLM, the AI-powered research tool, is also getting interactive Mind Maps, which can help you discover how different ideas relate to each other.
