Panic gripped Matool and Cheleri in Kannur, Kerala, after a golden jackal attacked residents, leaving six people, including two children, injured on Tuesday evening.

In Matool, the animal bit a child sitting on the veranda of a house. CCTV footage of the incident later surfaced, showing the jackal lashing out and biting the child’s leg.

In Cheleri, five of the victims were treated at Kannur District Hospital, while an elderly man who sustained an eye injury is undergoing treatment at the Kannur Government Medical College Hospital.

Frequent attacks reported

Residents said jackal attacks have become a recurring menace in the area, with frequent attacks reported in recent months.

Kannur Divisional Forest Officer Vysak Sasi said that in most cases of attacks, the golden jackals were found to be rabid, after being bitten by infected dogs.

He said habitat loss has worsened the problem.
