George Varghese, industrialist and planter, passes away

George Varghese (85), industrialist and planter, passed away here on Thursday.

Founder of the Midas Mileage group of industries, he pioneered the manufacture and marketing of tyre retreading materials across India and abroad. The group has also established multiple industrial units within Kerala and in other States. He was the owner of Panampunna Estate in Vazhoor, Kottayam.

He is survived by his children Sara Varghese, Varkey Varghese, and Paulose Varghese. His daughter Anna Varghese predeceased him. The late Mariam Varghese was his wife.

Mr. Varghese was the son of the late Baker Fen Varghese, a leading planter, and the late Saramma Varghese (B.F. Varughese), a noted social worker and author of several cookbooks.

The funeral service will be held at 4 p.m. on Saturday at Jerusalem Mar Thoma Church, Kottayam.
