Kerala

The Kasaragod Government Medical College witnessed its first-ever student admission on Monday, marking a milestone in the health education sector of the district.

Gurvinder Singh, a native of Alwar, Rajasthan, became the first MBBS student to secure admission through the all-India quota. He was welcomed with sweets by superintendent P.S. Praveen Kumar. Of the seven all-India seats allotted to the institution, one has been filled now.

The college authorities expect the remaining 50 State quota seats to be filled by September 30. With the completion of the first batch’s admission, officials said, a new chapter was being written for the district, which had long awaited a government medical college.

At present, the college has an OP department and some clinical and laboratory facilities. The Kasaragod General Hospital will function as its teaching hospital until a new 500-bed facility is ready. The teaching hospital is expected to be operational before the second year of the inaugural batch begins.
