An expert panel discussion held as part of the Tropical BioSummit 2025 at the Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies (Kufos) here on Friday recommended the setting up of long-term monitoring programmes for wetlands across India using high-end tools, including automated data loggers, bathymetry platforms, and satellite-based remote sensing.
The panel recommended developing interdisciplinary monitoring frameworks incorporating hydrology, biodiversity, pollution science, fisheries, ecosystem services, and socio-economic factors, according to a communication.
The other recommendations include conducting systematic assessments of biological productivity, fisheries resources, and trophic structure in wetlands to inform sustainable harvest regulations and developing wetland-specific fishery management plans using habitat modelling, ecological carrying capacity analysis, and species recovery strategies. Experts also suggested formulating individual restoration plans for each wetland, acknowledging that hydrology, biodiversity, and socio-ecological dynamics vary across systems, it said.
