Elon Musk, on Thursday, July 10, unveiled xAI’s latest model, Grok 4. The Tesla chief claimed that the Grok4 surpassed standardised tests and showcased PhD-level responses to academic questions across subjects. Musk’s AI startup also introduced a new $300 per month AI subscription plan named SuperGrok Heavy.

The new Grok 4 is xAI’s answer to frontier models introduced by OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic. The new model can analyse images and even respond to questions. During the livestream, Musk said that Grok 4 is better than PhD holders when it comes to answering academic questions in every subject. “At times, it may lack common sense, and it has not yet invented new technologies or discovered new physics, but that is just a matter of time,” he said.

xAI has introduced Grok 4 and multi-agent version Grok 4 Heavy with enhanced performance. According to the company, Grok 4 Heavy comes with multiple agents that work like a study group to find the best solution to a problem.

When it comes to performance, xAI claims Grok 4 demonstrates frontier-level performance on key benchmarks. On Humanity’s Last Exam—a tough test across math, humanities, and science—Grok 4 secured 25.4 per cent without tools, surpassing Gemini 2.5 Pro (21.6 per cent) and OpenAI’s o3 (21 per cent). On the other hand, Grok 4 Heavy reached 44.4 per cent, outperforming Gemini 2.5 Pro’s 26.9 per cent.

The SuperGrok Heavy, priced at $300 per month, is xAI’s most expensive subscription. Subscribers of SuperGrok Heavy may also get early access to new products by xAI that are likely to be launched in the next few months.

The launch of the latest edition of Grok comes at a time when Musk’s companies are undergoing tough times. On Wednesday, X CEO Linda Yaccarino stepped down from her role as the CEO of X after nearly two years with the company.

Earlier this week, Grok made headlines after xAI had to remove ‘inappropriate’ social media posts on Tuesday after complaints from X users. The chatbot had reportedly produced content with antisemitic tropes and praise for Adolf Hitler. “We are aware of recent posts made by Grok and are actively working to remove the inappropriate posts,” Grok posted on X.
