The swearing-in ceremony of the newly elected functionaries of the departmental students’ union (DSU) on the University of Calicut campus (CU) was disrupted on Thursday (December 18) after Vice-Chancellor (V-C) P. Raveendran objected to the “violation” of the official format of the oath.
According to sources, the newly elected functionaries wanted to pay tributes to “the martyrs who lost their lives in the struggle to build a new world order” while assuming office. However, Mr. Raveendran pointed out that this would violate the official format, according to which the functionaries can either take a solemn oath or swear in the name of God. When they refused to oblige, Mr. Raveendran walked out of the event. Denoj Sebastian, Registrar, also left the venue. Sources close to the V-C’s office claimed that the official oath in the proper format had earlier been given to the new functionaries.
