Students and experts found that Friday’s English paper was easy and that while the Mathematics paper was a bit lengthy, it was straightforward.
“The English paper was easy, having the traditional passage-based questions and grammar analysis questions,” said Anshu Mital, Principal of MRG School, Rohini, Delhi.
“Along with comprehension, questions based on vocabulary and grammar including synonyms, para jumbles, idioms, fill in the blanks, figure of speech, analogy, word substitution were also there in the section. Students found the paper to be easier than the Mock Tests given,” said Amitendra Kumar — Product Head CUET and Under Graduate Programmes at Career Launcher.
An example from the English paper was multiple questions providing students with a word and asking them to choose the alternative with the closest meaning to it from among four options. The kinds of words provided included ‘accelerate’, ‘pensive’ and ‘vigilant’.
Another example of questions was that students were provided jumbled phrases and had to choose the most coherent sentence from among four different arrangements of those phrases.
In section II or the domain subject papers, students found Mathematics to be a bit lengthy but easy. The History paper included questions testing students on the causes of events and asking them to identify people involved in key events. The Sociology paper included passages based on which students had to answer questions.
Section III or the general test focused mostly on current affairs including economics, politics, legal knowledge, personalities, science, sports, books and authors.
“Nearly 25 questions were based on current affairs and the remaining on numerical ability and reasoning including visual reasoning,” said Kumar.
The CUET is being conducted in two phases. The first phase will take place on July 15, 16, 19 and 20 and the second phase will be held on August 4, 5, 6, 7, 8,
and 10. The exam will have negative marking, meaning one mark will be deducted for each wrong answer. However, there will be no penalty for not attempting questions.
