Crimes against elderly people on the rise in Kochi: NCRB

Crimes against elderly people appear to be on the rise in and around Kochi city, going by the latest numbers released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). As many as 126 crimes allegedly committed against people aged 60 and above were reported within the metropolitan city in 2023, as per the NCRB data. This marks a sharp increase from the 74 such incidents reported in 2022 and just 28 cases in 2021. The chargesheeting rate for crimes against senior citizens in Kochi in 2023 is 74.5%.

Kozhikode, the only other city in Kerala featured in the report covering 19 metropolitan cities with a population of over 20 lakh, also recorded a rise in crimes in this category, with 93 cases in 2023 compared with 52 in 2022. The figure was 53 in 2021. The chargesheeting rate in Kozhikode in 2023 stands at 85.7%.

Delhi tops the list with 1,361 cases, followed by Bengaluru (649), Mumbai (518), and Chennai (399). Ghaziabad, Kanpur, and Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh, and Patna in Bihar, reported zero crimes in this category.

The detailed breakdown of the crimes shows that six senior citizens were murdered in four incidents in 2023, while one case was registered under attempt to murder. Notably, there were no murder cases among the 93 reported in Kozhikode that year, although one attempt to murder was recorded.

In 2023, nine incidents in Kochi in the crimes against senior citizens category were related to attempt to commit culpable homicide, while 30 cases were registered for causing ‘simple hurt’. Six incidents involved causing grievous hurt.

Five cases in the senior citizen category were registered under charges of assault on women with intent to outrage her modesty, while one case pertained to charges of rape. In 2022, Kochi recorded three murders and one rape in this category, with no cases of assault on women with intent to outrage her modesty in the age group that year.

A total of 46 senior citizens fell prey to cheating in as many incidents in Kochi in 2023, the NCRB data states. Other cases pertained to charges such as theft, extortion, robbery, and criminal trespass.
