The controversy surrounding Oasis Commercial’s proposed brewery in Elappully panchayat took a new turn on Wednesday, with the Puthussery panchayat offering to supply sufficient river water for the project.
The CPI(M)-ruled Puthussery panchayat has decided to supply water to Oasis Commercial’s brewery project, overriding opposition from the Congress and BJP members. The panchayat will provide water from the Walayar and Korayar rivers, potentially paving the way for the project’s implementation.
The Puthussery panchayat governing body discussed Oasis Commercial’s request for water supply, with the Congress and BJP members opposing it, citing drinking water and agricultural needs. The issue was put to vote, with nine members, including two independents, supporting the move to supply water, overriding the opposition.
Cong., BJP to rally public
The Congress and BJP have warned that they will mobilise public resistance if the panchayat proceeds with supplying water to Oasis Commercial.
The Congress-led Elapully panchayat has denied permission for Oasis Commercial’s brewery project. All major parties, except the CPI(M), are opposing the brewery construction in Elapully panchayat.
Parties including the Congress, BJP and CPI share concerns that the brewery could compromise food safety and harm agriculture in the area.
The Elapully grama panchayat’s efforts to take legal action against Oasis Commercial faced strong opposition from CPI(M) members. The CPI(M) had, on Tuesday, blocked the panchayat office, preventing officials from discussing the anti-brewery agenda.
Row in panchayat
BJP members accused the panchayat secretary of supporting the CPI(M)’s stance on the brewery, sparking heated exchanges during a special council meeting. The discussion on the brewery issue became contentious with verbal clashes between members.
The Congress and BJP have accused the CPI(M) of attempting to facilitate Oasis Commercial’s brewery project through questionable means, specifically by offering water supply from the Walayar and Korayar rivers.
Assembly of Christian Trust Services (ACTS) general secretary George Sebastian has warned the CPI(M) that it will face consequences for allegedly collaborating with Oasis Commercial to promote liquor production in Kerala. The CPI(M) has betrayed the State’s interests, he said.
Criticising the CPI(M) stand, Mr. Sebastian said, “The CPI(M) has further tarnished its image with Puthussery panchayat’s decision to supply water to the brewery. It is shameful that the CPI(M) is governing the State by relying on liquor and lottery.”
He said the people of Kerala would not allow one more liquor factory in the State even if all panchayats adopt resolutions for it.
