The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has slapped a fine of ₹1 lakh on an insurance company for denying claim to a person from Edavanna in the district.
The Commission ordered that the insurance company pay Mulangadan Mohammed Rafi ₹2,26,269 including ₹1 lakh fine.
Mr. Rafi approached the Commission after his claim was denied following a treatment at a private hospital at Manjeri. The insurance company argued that Mr. Rafi had hidden his ailment when he joined the insurance policy. It also argued that he had not provided his treatment documents.
However, the insurance company failed to prove its arguments before the Commission. According to the Commission, the insurance company failed to deliver its service.
It ordered that the insurance company pay Mr. Rafi his treatment expense of ₹126,269 and a fine of ₹1 lakh in damages. If not paid within a month, an interest of 9% will be levied from the insurance company.
