The new surgical block at Kottayam Medical College and several other newly completed facilities will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in January, Health Minister Veena George has said.
The facilities that have been completed include the surgical block, paramedical hostel, cath lab, biogas plant, renovated outpatient department and a lactation unit. In addition to the existing seven operation theatres, seven more have been made operational. The Minister said efforts are under way to complete the remaining works and make all facilities fully functional at the earliest.
A high level review meeting chaired by Health Minister Veena George was held to assess the progress of development works at Kottayam Medical College. Cooperation Minister V.N. Vasavan also attended the meeting.
The Health Minister directed officials to ensure that all ongoing development works at the medical college are completed in a time bound manner. Construction of the cardiology block, built at a cost of ₹36 crore, has been completed, while work on the infectious diseases block, estimated at ₹10 crore, is progressing. Directions have also been issued to initiate steps for constructing a new men’s hostel. Approval has been granted to start a postgraduate course in emergency medicine.
The Minister further instructed officials to expedite procedures for demolishing the unused EFG block. It was also decided to convene a special meeting involving the Electricity Minister and KIIFB representatives to discuss the construction of a 110 kV substation to ensure uninterrupted power supply to the hospital.
