Tvasta, a startup incubated at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, has built the country’s first 3D printed villa.
The deep tech startup has built the villa in Pune for Godrej Properties. The automated construction techniques it deployed have enabled futuristic design and faster completion time as compared to conventional construction techniques. Tvasta repurposes waste from construction and other industries. The 3D printed walls are designed to provide better insulation, resulting in lower energy consumption and reduced utility bills.
Parivarthan Reddy, co-founder of Tvasta termed it a ground-breaking project that demonstrated the potential of 3D printing technology in modern construction. “Through innovative features like patterned walls and complex architectural shapes, Tvasta has pushed the boundaries of conventional building design,” he said.
The advantages of 3D printing technology are that houses can be tailored to the need of individual customers and distinctive homes that stand out in style and functionality can be built. It reduces material waste, thus, contributing to an eco-friendly approach to housing construction and when concrete is used in 3D printing process, it enhances the resilience of the structures.
Tvasta has expanded into the international market, selling 3D construction printers in the US and West Asia. The startup sold mobile 3D printers to TNT Development Company in North Carolina for workforce housing and to Virginia Tech for affordable housing development.
The startup has been manufacturing bus shelters for municipalities, boundary walls for Chepauk stadium and marine structures. Tvasta recently won the Building Materials and Technology Promotion Council performance appraisal certification scheme (a regulatory approval for emerging construction technology). It was founded in 2016 by alumni of the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras.
