A charred body of a woman was discovered on an abandoned plot near Kaimanam in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, late Thursday (May 15, 2025).
The deceased was identified as Sheeja, a resident of Karumom, by her relatives early Friday morning. The body was found in Kuttikkattil Lane, close to a residential area.
According to preliminary reports, Sheeja is suspected to have died around 10.30 p.m.
Residents in the area reported hearing a woman’s screams for help around the same time. However, by the time help arrived, it was too late. The Karamana police were alerted shortly afterward, and the body was shifted to the Thiruvananthapuram Government Medical College Hospital (MCH) following inquest proceedings on Friday.
Foul play suspected
The incident occurred near the residence of Saji Kumar, with whom Sheeja was reportedly in a relationship. Her family has raised serious allegations of foul play, claiming that Saji has a criminal background and a history of assaulting Sheeja.
Her cousin, Suresh, alleged that Saji had also recently created a ruckus at a store near the MCH, where Sheeja worked as a salesperson.
Saji has been taken into custody by the Karamana police for questioning.
Minister for General Education and Labour, V. Sivankutty, who represents the Nemom Assembly constituency under which the area falls, visited the scene and assured a thorough and transparent investigation.
