Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has said that the proposed ‘Canal City’ project, a development initiative revolving around the Connolly canal in Kozhikode city, will be launched next year and completed in three years.
He was responding to questions at a district-level interactive event held at a convention centre at Cheruvannur in Kozhikode to mark the fourth anniversary of the Left Democratic Front government on Tuesday. A select group of around 500 people were invited to the event.
Mr. Vijayan said that 10 acres would be acquired to increase the width of the canal to 14 metres. A sum of ₹1,118 crore would be spent on the project, he said.
The Chief Minister said that an environmental impact study for deepening the navigational channel around the Beypore port was being held. The study would be completed by October, he said.
Mr. Vijayan said that there were impediments before the proposed tunnel road to Wayanad. Land had been acquired, and the engineering, procurement and construction tender had been awarded. Works on the widening of the national highway was progressing well in the district. The work on the Vengalam-Ramanattukara reach was 95% over and Azhiyur-Vengalam reach was 65% over.
Mr. Vijayan said that the proposed Organ and Tissue Transplant Institute would start functioning from a temporary facility on the Government Medical College Hospital campus soon. The State government would make every effort to get an All-India Institute of Medical Sciences for Kerala.
Various private companies had evinced interest to invest ₹885 crore at the Government Cyber Park, Kozhikode. As many as 14,965 jobs would be created there. Work on a memorial for writer Vaikom Muhammad Basheer in Beypore was in its final stages. It would be part of the proposed ‘Literary Circuit’ connecting various literary figures in Kozhikode, Malappuram and Palakkad districts, he added.
