The State Cabinet on Wednesday authorised the relocation of the Women Prison and Correctional Home at Attakulangara in Thiruvananthapuram to the old women’s block of the Thiruvananthapuram Central Prison at Poojappura.
This move, which will incur no additional financial burden on the State, is in line with plans to set up another high-level prison in the southern region of the State.
The existing women’s prison will be transformed into a temporary special sub-jail, capable of housing up to 300 inmates. This will be in accordance with the condition that the facility will be merged with the new prison once it is established.
The Cabinet has approved the creation of 35 temporary posts for a three-year period to facilitate the reform. Besides, 15 people will be hired from the Kerala State Ex-Servicemen Development and Rehabilitation Corporation (KEXCON) on temporary basis as assistant prison officers to assist in jail operations.
The Cabinet also approved the establishment of a new sub-jail in Alappuzha. The new facility will be set up at the location where the Alappuzha District Jail stood earlier. As many as 24 new posts will also be created for the operation of the sub-jail.
