The vital organs of a 46-year-old woman, including the heart, liver, kidneys and corneas, have been donated by the family after her brainstem death was confirmed by doctors at Baby Memorial Hospital at Kozhikode, where she was being treated, on Thursday.
K. Ajitha of Velliyancheri, Chalappuram, Kozhikode, had been admitted to the Baby Memorial hospital on September 28, after she went into a sudden cardiac arrest. Brain death was confirmed on Thursday, following which her family expressed their willingness to donate her organs.
Ajitha’s heart will now beat in a 44-year-old woman at Metro hospital, Kozhikode, who had been awaiting a new heart.
One of the kidneys and both corneas were received by the Kozhikode Government Medical College while the other kidney and liver were received by the Baby Memorial hospital.
All arrangements for completing the organ donation procedure were coordinated by the Kerala State Organ and Tissue Transplantation Organisation.
Health Minister Veena George conveyed her appreciation and gratitude to the family of the deceased who had come forward for organ donation even amidst their grief.
Ajitha is survived by her husband, P. Ravindran, a son and daughter.
