Technology

Apple just wrapped its fall hardware event of the year. It’s the second in-person event the company has held since the start of the pandemic. The company focused on four iPhone 14 models, three Apple Watch models, including a new high-end ‘Ultra’ variant, and its latest AirPods Pro 2.

Here’s are some highlights from the event:

Apple Watch Series 8

Apple CEO Tim Cook has kicked off the launch event with Apple Watch news. It’s called the Series 8. The watch is more durable than previous models and has a new temperature sensor the company will use to help track women’s health including ovulation.

Apple Watch 8 also comes with a Crash Detection feature that can detect if you were in a severe car crash, automatically connecting you with emergency services. The Crash Detection feature will share your location and notify your emergency contacts as well.

Apple’s also introducing a low power mode, which extends the Watch’s battery life to 36 hours — the feature will also be coming to older watches, starting with the Series 4, as long as they’re running watchOS 9.

It will come in four colours — black, gold, aluminium, and red — and three colours in stainless steel. It costs at least Rs 45,900 for an aluminium model.

Apple Watch SE

Apple is also announcing a redesigned Apple Watch SE, which is an entry-level version of its Series 8. The new model includes a  bigger screen, new plastic design on the underside of the watch, Heart rate notifications and Fall detection. It will retail for Rs 29,900 on September 16.

Apple Watch Ultra

As expected, Apple Watch Ultra is a high-end watch with a new design, bigger screen, and titanium case. The device is aimed at professional athletes and runners. It will cost Rs 89,900 and will hit retail shelves on September 23.  An action button is customisable for quick physical control over a range of functions. The digital crown and side button are remodelled for use with gloves, and you get a second speaker for louder sound. The Ultra can work in extreme cold and hot temperatures. The compass has been updated too. An alarm lets you alert people up to 600-feet away. There’s also an Oceanic Plus app for the Apple Watch Ultra that lets you plan your dive and turns your regular watch into a diving computer.

AirPods Pro 2

Apple also launched the second-generation AirPods Pro. The new AirPods Pro wireless earbuds feature an updated processing chip for better sound quality. It includes new touch control to adjust the volume. There’s also a new low distortion audio driver and custom amplifier to provide more sound detail and clarity. Apple said that noise cancellation on the AirPods Pro 2 is twice as good as before. They start at Rs 26,900 and will launch on September 23.

Apple iPhone 14 and 14 Plus

Apple is adding two new entry-level iPhone 14 models this year. There’s an iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus. The iPhone 14 has a 6.1-inch screen, while the Plus has a 6.7-inch screen. Both models have a super retina custom OLED display, ceramic shield glass, and aerospace-grade aluminium body, and come in five colours: midnight, starlight, light blue, purple and red.

As for cameras, there’s a 12-megapixel main camera with a faster aperture, larger sensor and bigger pixels. The ultra-wide camera is also a 12-megapixel one. The front-facing camera has been upgraded, with autofocus and a wider aperture. Apple is also adding emergency SOS via Satellite. The service connects to emergency services even if the user is outside of cellular or wi-fi range. It’s free for iPhone 14 users in the U.S. and Canada. The iPhone 14 will start at Rs 79,900 and the Plus will cost Rs 89,900.

Apple iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max

The iPhone 14 and 14 Pro are Apple’s new high-end models. The iPhone 14 Pro has a 6.1-inch screen and the iPhone 14 Pro Max is the bigger model with a 6.7-inch screen. The Pro and Pro Max models have new displays that are brighter and sharper than the previous models. They also include the always-on display. They also boast a new A16 Apple chip, which focuses on power efficiency, display and camera performance. Both phones have surgical-grade stainless steel and are available in four colours: space black, silver, gold and deep purple.

There’s a new front design, which will surely turn heads. Instead of the annoying notch, there is a pill-shaped module like a capsule. Dubbed “Dynamic Island”,  this capsule changes shapes – transforming into a second display sort of. The new Pro models will have a 48-megapixel sensor with a quad-pixel sensor with larger pixel sizes. It’s a 7-element lens with an f/1.78 aperture. The 12MP ultrawide camera is also there to support better low-light photos — a 3x improvement. And there’s a 12MP telephoto lens with a 2x zoom. The iPhone 14 Pro will start at Rs 129,900 and the bigger model starts at Rs 139,900. That’s the same price as last year’s models.
