Kerala

Two cases of amoebic meningoencephalitis were confirmed in the district in the last two days, with one case being reported from Kodumon in Attingal on Monday and another from Edava in Varkala on Tuesday.

The case that was confirmed on Tuesday is that of a 35-year-old woman. She had came for clinical evaluation to the Neurology department at Government Medical College Hospital (MCH), Thiruvananthapuram, as she had been suffering from diplopia or “double vision” for a long time. Her cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) sample showed the presence of amoeba in wet microscopy and it was confirmed as Acanthamoeba through PCR test on Tuesday.

Though epidemiological investigations are continuing, the woman apparently was in the habit of nasal irrigation as part of religious practices, which poses a clear risk of contracting amoebic infection, according to sources.

Thiruvananthapuram district has reported 22 cases of amoebic meningoencephalitis this year so far. Of these, nine are currently undergoing treatment at the MCH, 10 were discharged while three persons could not be saved.
