Alstom India will start supplies to the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) of Indian Railways for Vande Bharat sleeper trains from next fiscal, said Champak Panda, Managing Director of Alstom India’s Rolling Stock and Component business.
Alstom had bagged a contract worth €144 million (approximately ₹1,285 crore) to supply Mitrac traction components and other electrical equipment for 17 Vande Bharat Sleeper trainsets (408 cars) to the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai.
It has started supplying to the Rail Coach Factory at Kapurthala and will deliver four train sets (Vande Bharat sitting trains) this financial year, he added.
With India having 16 metro rail projects and 20 more in the pipeline, the country has high potential in urban mobility. For Alstom, both, India and global business are having similar growth rates and India has opportunities to grow faster, he said.
Alstom invested €17 million since 2021 in its component business in India and started production of motors at the Coimbatore plant two years ago. Almost 60 % of the components produced at the Coimbatore plant are exported, he said. The company is also evaluating the possibility of bringing its transformer manufacturing capability to India, he added.
