Aided teachers’ collective to file contempt plea against Minister

Kerala

A group of aided school teachers, whose appointments have not been approved by the State government, are planning to approach the Kerala High Court seeking contempt of court proceedings against General Education Minister V. Sivankutty for his recent statements related to reservations for differently abled applicants in aided schools.

The apex court had, in March this year, allowed the Nair Service Society (NSS) to regularise the posts of teachers in its aided schools, other than those marked for the differently abled people. Functionaries of the Kerala Aided Teachers’ Collective said here on Tuesday (September 30) that Mr. Sivankutty’s recent statement that the Supreme Court order was applicable only to the schools under NSS managements was misleading.

Binsin Eakkattur, president of the collective, claimed that the High Court, in its order in March, had clarified that the apex court order in the NSS case was also applicable to other school teachers who had handed over posts under the differently abled quota in similar circumstances. He said that the Kerala government had then filed an application in the court seeking more time to implement the order.

Functionaries of the collective also pointed out that a majority of the appointments made in aided schools were temporary in nature. According to official figures, a total of 1,12,650 appointments were made between 2016 and 2025. Of them, only 36,318 were permanent posts, which meant that the rest were on a daily wage basis. They also claimed that 90% of the 60,500 appointments made between 2021 and 2025 were on a daily wage basis. The rest were temporary appointments, they added.
