Administration on alert as rain batters Kollam

As heavy rain continues to batter several parts of Kollam, the district administration has taken emergency steps to tackle rain-related incidents.

Various departments have been instructed to stay prepared to deal with related disasters and the 24×7 war room and taluk control rooms will be operational all time.

Collector Afsana Parveen has asked the Irrigation department to remove the sand deposited in the Paravur backwaters as the water level has risen, flooding houses in the Mayyanad, Mukkam and Thanni areas. The Irrigation and Geology departments have been asked to solve the rock shortage affecting the construction of the side wall along the Alappad coast.

In Karunagapally taluk, nine houses have been partially destroyed and electronic appliances of three houses damaged in lightning. In Punalur, 25 houses have been partially damaged and three houses completely destroyed in heavy rain.

In Kunnathur, two houses have been partially damaged and in Pathanapuram one house has been completely destroyed. While one death has been reported in Kottarakara, farmers hace suffered huge losses in many parts. Health officials have said that the department is ready to deal with emergencies and chlorination and fogging are progressing. The district administration has directed the Coastal police to stay more vigilant.
