Babu Parthan, a Centre for Indian Trade Unions (CITU) headload worker at Bison Valley in Idukki has sculpted a statue in honour of the late Congress leader and Chief Minister Oommen Chandy in a tribute transcending political divide.
“It wasn’t his politics. Oommen Chandy was a humanist above all, and that’s why I sculpted his statue,” says Parthan.
Parthan says Chandy had gained acceptance from all corners for his interventions and humanitarian approach. “The idea of the sculpture was shared with a few local Congress leaders and they encouraged me, and it resulted in the statue,” he says.
He spent over ₹2 lakh to make the statue. “Some Congress well-wishers provided money for the construction work of the statue. I hope the Congress will accept the statute and fix it at a right place that fits the stature of the late leader,” he says.
Earlier, Parthan had made statues of Mahatma Gandhi and Parashurama, which had gained wide acceptance.
