Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] leader M. Pradeep, who is returning for a second stint as the chairperson of the Attingal municipality, has set his sights on taking up major infrastructural work on the waste management, health and other sectors.
The script in the local body election results in the Attingal municipality played out almost in a manner similar to the previous two elections, with the Left Democratic Front (LDF) emerging as the front with the maximum number of seats. However, with 16 seats, it still fell one short of the required majority of 17.
Mr. Pradeep had earlier served as the chairperson of the municipality in the 2015-2020 term, during which the civic body had fetched national awards especially in waste management. He told The Hindu on Tuesday that one of the projects the new administration initiated was the construction of the new municipal town hall.
“Though the town hall project was considered even during my term, it never took off. Now, the procedures have been completed and the construction work began yesterday (Monday),” he said.
In the waste management sector, the priority would be for setting up an incinerator to process sanitary waste. The work on the sanitary landfill would also be completed, he said. Another major initiative would be a waste management facility for the Government Taluk Hospital. The municipality was also planning the construction of a mortuary and freezer facility at the hospital as well as a shelter home to take care of the destitute, attached to the hospital, he said.
Drinking water scarcity in several areas was expected to be addressed through a major project to be taken up in association with the Kerala Water Authority to improve connectivity. The women’s hostel facility would also become functional at the earliest, said Mr. Pradeep.
