The government is working to amend the Sugar Control Order and further align it with the requirements of the industry at present, Secretary (Food) at the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Sanjeev Chopra said Thursday.
Whilst mentioning initiatives from the government at the annual general meeting of the Indian Sugar & Bio-energy Manufacturers Association (ISMA), he stated, “Sugar Control Order is also something we are also working on, to amend that and bring it more in line with the requirements of the industry today.”
Mr. Chopra added that the amendments would be put up for public consultations. “You will hear about that shortly,” he stated. Although he did not divulge details about the amendments.
The Union Government instituted the Sugar (Control) Order 2025 this May replacing the erstwhile regulation of 1966, which, among other things, brought raw sugar into the ambit of regulation. The revision was aimed at “simplifying and streamlining the regulatory framework governing the sugar sector in line with current industry dynamics and technological advancements”.
