The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) will introduce electric double-decker buses in Thrissur and Kozhikode, KSRTC Chairman and Managing Director Pramoj Shankar said on Wednesday.
Mr. Shankar was speaking at a workshop on ‘Driving E-Truck Ecosystem with PM E-DRIVE Scheme’ organised by the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) in collaboration with the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICTT).
The transport utility already operates e-double-deckers in Thiruvananthapuram city as part of its 165-strong e-bus fleet. The e-bus-based city services in Thiruvananthapuram has helped to reduce air pollution and traffic congestion on city roads.
The KSRTC has also observed a “sharp increase” in passenger patronage of city circular buses, Mr. Shankar said.
He underscored the need for adequate public-friendly charging infrastructure facilities to boost the e-vehicle ecosystem. Transparency and affordability are also vital for a robust EV ecosystem, he said. Mr. Shankar urged public sector institutions to become early adopters of electric vehicle technology.
