CPI national secretariat member K. Prakash Babu on Saturday said the Union government is trying to move towards dictatorship while retaining democracy, and the Special Intensive Revision process is part of that effort.

Mr Babu was speaking at a meet-the-press organised by the Press Club in association with the SBI Officers’ Association as part of the ongoing ‘Deshapporu’ programme.

“The Election Commission is adopting a specific stance towards certain sections in some States. In BJP-ruled Assam, it has currently decided against implementing the SIR,” he said.

He said this is a democratic process designed to solidify dictatorship since more than 40 lakh people in Bihar were unable to vote. “In Kerala, five lakh people were excluded from the list. We are not opposed to implementing the SIR, but the issue is why the year 2002 is being used as the criterion. Lakhs of expatriates would be omitted through this process,” he said.

He alleged that the Union government is attempting to move forward by destroying democracy and the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) emerged in this manner, “We see the current developments in the country with anxiety. There is an ongoing attempt to distort history. The Communist party and others fought against the British in the freedom struggle, and many became martyrs. However, our rulers are now saying that children should not study the history of the freedom struggle in which they had no part.”

He said the welfare activities implemented by the State government would be a major talking point in this election.

Responding to a question, he said that the Sabarimala case is unlikely to become a major issue against the government in the election. “The government is moving forward with strong measures. The government’s stand on the Sabarimala issue is that the truth must come out. The CPI(M) State secretary himself has said that the guilty, even if they are top leaders, will not be protected,” he said.
