In a local body election season already drawing attention for its strong line-up of young candidates, a recently retired civil servant has joined the fray. E. Anithakumari, who served for many years as Deputy Collector in Kozhikode and Wayanad districts, with responsibilities in disaster management and election administration, is contesting as the LDF candidate from the Mathottam ward of the Kozhikode Corporation.
“There is certainly a difference between the two profiles. However, my leadership experience as an NGO union functionary in the past will help me adapt to this new role with confidence,” says Ms. Anithakumari who retired from service in May 2025.
Current priority
While some supporters have already spoken of her as a potential Deputy Mayor, she is quick to reject such speculations. No such discussions have taken place, she clarifies. The priority now is just to win the ward with a thumping margin, she clarifies
She began her career as a Lower Division Clerk in 1989. “I was deeply engaged in addressing public issues during my service as tahsildar and later as deputy collector. That experience will guide me now,” she notes.
Her campaign has gained momentum with the support of former councillors and local leaders, who have already reached out to around 60 households directly in the ward. Her husband V.P. Rajan, a former District Labour Officer who retired from service in 2020, is also actively campaigning alongside her.
“I am not interested in making any grand promises. What matters most is ensuring continuity for the good work done by outgoing councillor Muhammad Navas,” she says, adding that the warm reception from residents and the enthusiasm of her campaign team give her a lot of confidence.
