Parts of the State are likely to witness a few isolated spells of heavy rain during the fag end of this month, triggered by the low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal. Currently, a low-pressure area lies over the coastal areas of Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining north Odisha and the northwest Bay of Bengal. This hardly has any influence on the monsoonal conditions prevailing in the State. However, another fresh low-pressure area is likely to form over east-central and adjoining the north Bay of Bengal around September 25.
Moving west-northwestwards, this system is very likely to become a depression over the northwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal off the South Odisha-North Andhra Pradesh coasts around September 26 and it is very likely to cross the South Odisha-North Andhra Pradesh coasts around September 27. This is expected to draw moisture from the ocean and trigger isolated heavy rains in parts of the State.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert for five districts on Thursday. Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam and Thrissur were put on yellow alert, where rain in the range of 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm is likely during the next 24 hours. Six districts were also put on yellow alert on Friday in the central and southern regions, and five districts in north Kerala on Saturday. This is likely to be the last major system during the four-month southwest monsoon period in Kerala, which will draw to a close by September 30.
