Congress MP Rajmohan Unnithan has welcomed the Cherthala court’s dismissal of a defamation case filed against him by K.P. Sasikala, former State president of the Hindu Aikya Vedi, asserting that his political and legal fight against those who “spread hatred as an epidemic” will continue.
The case was filed in connection with remarks Mr. Unnithan made during a television discussion in October 2017 where he allegedly referred to Sasikala as “Vishakala”. The prosecution argued that the remarks were defamatory, but the court acquitted the MP on Saturday.
Reacting to the verdict, Mr. Unnithan said his comments were linked to the murder of BJP worker Fahadh Mon, which he claimed was carried out by a “Kapalika”, influenced by Ms. Sasikala’s speech.
“The basis of my reaction at that time was the killing of a young boy named Fahad Mon by a Kapalika, who took Sasikala’s speech as an inspiration,” he had said.
In a Facebook post soon after the judgment, the MP stressed that he had no regrets about his remarks and rejected any suggestions of compromise through an apology.
‘We are not used to apologising’
“We are not used to apologising. Our ancestors did not teach us that through their actions during the freedom struggle. Death is better than that, and this realisation gave us strength in the legal fight,” he wrote.
Mr. Unnithan thanked his legal team, including former Waqf Board chairman T.K. Saidalikutty, advocate B.M. Jamal and C.V. Thomas, for standing by him throughout the trial.
“You alone are my strength,” he added in his post, addressing his supporters.
The defamation case had been pending since 2017, becoming one of several high-profile legal battles between political leaders in the State over comments made during heated debates.
While welcoming the acquittal, Mr. Unnithan said his “opposition to divisive forces would remain firm, no matter what the price is.”
