The number of people undergoing treatment for amoebic meningoencephalitis at the Government Medical College Hospital, Kozhikode, rose to 10 on Saturday when a 13-year-old boy from Malappuram was diagnosed with the infection.
According to sources, six persons are at the main block of the hospital and four children are at the Institute of Maternal and Child Health wing.
Meanwhile, Health department officials have begun steps to ascertain the source of infection of a Thrissur native who passed away while undergoing treatment on September 19. Raheem, 59, a native of Chavakkad in Thrissur, had been working at a hotel in Panniyankara in the city. The Kozhikode Corporation has directed that the hotel be closed till further orders. Water samples from the hotel and Rahim’s residential premises have been collected for lab analysis. People in the neighbourhood and others associated with the hotel have been asked to seek medical treatment if they have any symptoms.
