‘Line patrolling’ along overhead power lines following a spate of electrical mishaps this year revealed 45,200 defects, Electricity Minister K. Krishnankutty informed the State Assembly on Wednesday.
Patrolling was conducted along 1,20,782 km of power lines. As many as 15,511 defects were corrected. The remaining ones would be rectified in a time-bound manner, Mr. Krishnankutty said.
Replying to questions from the Opposition UDF, Mr. Krishnankutty also stated that 170 people had died between 2016 and July 20, 2025, after coming into contact with snapped live wires.
Boy’s death
The Opposition UDF MLAs had raised the matter in the House drawing attention to the recent spate of electrical accidents including the one which claimed the life of Midhun, a 13-year-old student of the Boys’ High School, Thevalakkara.
Majority of the accidents related to snapped conductors have been reported in the southwest monsoon months of May, June, July, and August.
The Power department is also exploring the possibilities in artificial intelligence (AI) in preventing electrical mishaps, he said. The department has formed a committee consisting of officials from the Indian Institute of Technology-Palakkad, Kerala State Electricity Board, and the Electrical Inspectorate to study the feasibility.
