The International Institute for People with Disabilities (IIPD) is a model movement that presents India to the world, filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan has said. He was inaugurating the construction of the IIPD in Kasaragod.
The IIPD is being developed as a world-class centre for the comprehensive development of differently abled people under the Thiruvananthapuram-based Different Art Centre (DAC).
Writer T. Padmanabhan, DAC executive director Gopinath Muthukad, and district panchayat president Baby Balakrishan were present.
The construction is being undertaken by Uralungal Labour Contract Cooperative Society. and others participated.
The ₹100-crore project will have advanced training and therapy facilities, vocational centres, and assistive device units. It will also provide shelter to children, including those affected by endosulfan. The first phase is scheduled for completion in 2026, while the full project will be operational by 2029.
