Kerala

The Railway Protection Force (RPF) at the Ernakulam Junction (South) station arrested one more accused who was absconding after being booked for allegedly throwing stones at the Alappuzha-Kannur Express.

Saneesh P.K., 38, of Chandiroor was arrested from Aroor, days after another accused, Lijin N. of Alappuzha, was apprehended by the RPF Crime Prevention and Detection Squad.

The accused have been charged under sections 153 (endangering safety of persons travelling by railway by wilful act) and 147 (trespass and refusal to desist from trespass) of the Railways Act, RPF sources said.

The lookout glass of the locomotive was broken in the alleged incident which took place on August 30 when the train reached Kumbalam. Both the accused have been remanded.

Compensation

With the rise in incidents of stone-throwing at trains, the RPF has initiated steps to recover compensation for losses from the accused. “As a deterrent against similar acts by miscreants in the future, the RPF has decided to invoke Section 395 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita in such cases. The section deals with granting compensation to the victim,” Ernakulam South RPF Inspector Binoy Antony said.
