The Government Railway Police (GRP) has constituted a special investigation team to nab a migrant labourer who allegedly robbed ₹85,000 and a mobile phone from an elderly woman passenger hailing from Thrissur and pushed her out of the train to escape from the spot.
The incident took place near Kallayi in Kozhikode city on Friday (August 8) when the woman was travelling by Sampark Kranti Express. The injured passenger was identified as Ammini Jose. She was on her way back home along with her brother after attending the funeral of a close relative in Mumbai.
A senior police officer with the investigation team said it was a narrow escape for her after the dangerous fall on the railway track. Ammini’s brother who happened to see the incident while coming out of the washroom immediately pulled the emergency chain and sought the assistance of the police to rescue her, they said.
Police sources said the 64-year-old suffered minor head injuries and was allowed to go home after a detailed medical check-up at Kozhikode Medical College Hospital. Her statement was recorded in detail to zero in on the suspect who reportedly jumped from the train to escape after the assault, they said.
“Amini was pushed out of the train while she was trying to resist the robbery attempt. As her seat was very close to the door, the robber managed to push her off easily from the moving train after snatching her bag and phone,” said a GRP Officer who is now part of the investigation. He also said the closed circuit television camera visuals from various spots had already been gathered to make headway in the probe.
